Who Can Get LANAP?

The LANAP procedure is a great leap forward in dental treatments. Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) has allowed periodontists to treat their patients in a manner that is less painful, cost effective, and has little or no down time. LANAP makes use of lasers to remove gum tissue damaged by disease or infection. It is FDA-approved and has been shown to guarantee results. Note that laser technology is used for other dental procedures, such as:

  • Reducing tooth sensitivity
  • Detecting cavities
  • Whitening teeth
  • Replacing scalpels in many oral surgeries
  • Cutting, vaporizing and cauterizing soft tissue

So who can get LANAP? Basically anyone with periodontal disease, but you should specifically look out for these signs:

#3 Existence of “Pockets”

There is a natural space between the gum and the tooth. These spaces become deeper with gum disease and bone deterioration, and they are called ‘pockets’. You should go for LANAP if your dentist has located gum pockets 5mm or deeper. You should also consult an experienced periodontist for laser treatment if your dental practitioner recommends gum surgery.

#2 Onset of Gum Disease

Gum disease is mostly the result of poor oral hygiene. Other factors include genetics, or side-effects of medication. One of the first signs of gum disease is bleeding gums. If you have gums that bleed easily, you may have gum infection or inflammation that can be treated with LANAP.

#1 Other Medical Conditions

Finally, periodontitis can happen due to other medical conditions as well. Risk factors include heart disease and diabetes. Even pregnant women are at risk. Bacteria accumulation in the mouth doesn’t only lead to gum disease, but affects blood circulation and other physical functions of the body as well. If you have any of these conditions, get a periodontal examination right away.
