Gum Disease and Diabetes: Is there a Connection?

las vegas diabetes and periodontal disease

The dreadful disease diabetes is susceptible to harming your many areas of your body. And one thing most people aren’t aware of is that diabetes can also cause problems to their mouth. People suffering from diabetes are therefor more likely to pick up periodontal diseases as compared to people who don’t suffer from diabetes.

Periodontal disease is an infection that harms the gums. In serious stages, it causes severe pain while chewing and can even result in loss of teeth. This infection, as is with any infection, may also affect your blood sugar levels.

Gum diseases effect the diabetic control of a patient and is one of the reasons why diabetes is considered such a complicated disease. Patients suffering from diabetes are more prone to gum diseases and tooth loss in contrast to people who have good sugar control. According to a recent research, scientists claim that by controlling blood sugar level, many health complications can be avoided.

Bacteria: Mostly bacteria grow from sugar and glucose contained in diabetes. Due to high glucose level in the mouth, bacteria easily finds nourishment and grows, causing gum diseases.

Thickening of blood vessels: Another complication associated with diabetes is the thickening of blood vessels. Blood vessels carry food and oxygen to all parts of the body and take away the waste product. Patients suffering from diabetes have thicker blood vessels. Hence the thicker blood vessels carrying nourishment to the gum tissues are not able to provide sufficient amount of food and hinder the removal of waste product. In turn, the gums and surrounding tissues become weak. The weaker the gums, the more likely they are to be exposed to infections and diseases.

So without a doubt, there is a strong connection between gum disease and diabetes, and if you are diabetic, you must take precautions so as not to let it affect your oral health.
