Whether your tooth loss was caused by trauma or disease, it affects much more than the appearance of your smile. Once a tooth is missing, there is no longer force being applied to the underlying bone and this can cause that bone to gradually dissolve. This process of bone loss will ultimately change the appearance of your jawline from the outside and cause you to look older than you actually are.
Although full or partial dentures are a common replacement for missing teeth, they still do not prevent the reshaping of your jawline and you will continue to experience bone loss. The same is true for dental bridges, which also require that the adjacent teeth be ground down to accommodate the prosthetic.
Your best choice is to replace the missing tooth or teeth is with an appliance that looks and acts just like a natural tooth—a dental implant. Dental implants are a permanent way to restore your smile and protect your jawline.
- Single Dental Implant: A single dental implant is recommended to replace a missing tooth as long as there is sufficient bone left to anchor it too. The longer you wait to receive an implant, the higher the risk of significant bone loss so it is not a procedure you want to put off. A dental implant may still be possible for patients with a high amount of bone loss if they undergo a bone grafting procedure prior to the dental implant.
- Multiple Dental Implants: Following the same process as single dental implants, multiple dental implants are ideal for patients who have multiple missing teeth but not enough to warrant a full mouth restoration.
- All-On-4: Before you consider wearing full dentures, look into the All-On-4 full arch replacement first. All-On-4 is a full set of teeth that are anchored to the jawbone using four implant posts. Because the posts are inserted at an angle, this procedure does not require as much bone as a single implant does.
