Oral Frenectomy

For patients suffering from ankyloglossia, the muscle that attaches their tongue to the floor of their mouth is too short and can cause difficulty in feeding for infants and speech problems for older children. Fortunately, this is an easy fix and can be taken care of in one visit to the periodontist.

The frenum is a fold of tissue found at the base of your tongue that is also attached to the bottom of your mouth. It really serves no purpose and causes no problems when it is removed. When the frenum is too tight, the tongue’s movement is severely restricted and that’s when a frenectomy is necessary.

This is a condition that people are born with, and sometimes it will correct itself on its own. When it begins to interfere with one’s ability to eat or speak, that’s when it needs to be removed by a laser or scalpel. A frenectomy, a minor surgery, is performed in the office in about 15 minutes under local anesthesia.

We encourage patients who have had a frenectomy to keep the area as clean as possible while it’s healing. Gargling with salt water is especially helpful with this. If your stitches are not the dissolvable kind, we will schedule a follow-up appointment for removal.
