Lung Infections

Gum disease can cause respiratory infections like pneumonia. Gum disease develops when bacteria growth goes unchecked in your mouth (mostly because of poor oral hygiene). Over time, you are essentially breathing in bacteria from your mouth into your lungs, which is dangerous.

Mental Illness

Research shows that gum disease is also linked with mental conditions like dementia and Alzheimer’s. This is possible as bacteria from gum disease can enter the brain through the bloodstream, or nerve channels going into the brain.

Heart Disease

As mentioned above, bacteria from the mouth can enter the blood-stream, which can also increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Bacteria hardens the arteries (a condition known as atherosclerosis), which can hinder blood flow through the body. Not to mention, bacteria from gingivitis can also cause endocarditis (which is an infection in the inner lining of the heart).

These are just some of the health hazards that result from gum disease. Other times, a disease or illness can cause gum disease and other oral problems. These include:

  • Diabetes
  • Osteoporosis
  • HIV/Aids
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

So, oral hygiene is not just about yellow teeth or puffy gums. It is significantly linked to your overall health, and you should not take your oral well-being lightly.

What you Should Do

Now that you know what happens when you neglect oral hygiene, it is time you should take some preventative measures:
