During pregnancy, you do everything you can to make sure your baby stays healthy and this trend continues as soon as your child is born. Many women, however, end up neglecting their oral health while pregnant even though they take care of everything else. In addition to your regular brushing and losing routine, you need to work with your periodontist to make sure you are healthy.
Is It Safe To Go To The Periodontist?
There is a lot of conflicting information online, but it is completely safe to go to the periodontist while you are pregnant. In fact, we will tell you that this is a crucial part of oral hygiene. Oral health is strongly related to overall health so checking for periodontal disease, and other issues is key. Just let us know that you are pregnant so we can avoid unnecessarily invasive procedures and prescribe medications that won’t affect your pregnancy. In rare cases, we’ll work with your doctor and may decide to temporarily postpone any dental surgeries, such as during a high-risk pregnancy.
Special Concerns During Pregnancy
Most women go through their entire pregnancy without any issues but you may sometimes experience new issues or the worsening of current ones. Some women, for example, will develop pregnancy gingivitis which can lead to more serious issues if not treated. Pregnancy tumors on the gums are also a possibility during your second trimester, but these are not cancerous. We can remove them, but it typically isn’t necessary as they will go away by themselves. During your pregnancy, you need to take extra care to brush twice every day and floss once since pregnant women have a higher risk of cavities.
Make an appointment with Dr. DeAndrade at Anthem Periodontics to discuss your particular pregnancy and make sure you aren’t at risk of gum disease or other issues that can affect your growing baby.
