Signs Of Periodontal Disease (aka periodontitis!)

The most common types of gum disease we see in our practice are gingivitis and periodontitis. Left untreated, these conditions can lead to a host of other problems not only for your mouth, but your throughout your whole body. Schedule an appointment with Dr. DeAndrade if you are experiencing any of the following to protect the health of your mouth:

Symptoms of Gingivitis

  • Red and swollen gums
  • Tender gums
  • Gums bleed while brushing
  • Teeth appear elongated due to gums receding

Symptoms of Periodontitis

  • Swollen gums
  • Red or purple Gums
  • New spaces between teeth
  • Pus between your teeth and gums
  • Bad breath
  • Persistent bad taste in your mouth
  • Loose teeth

Left untreated, gingivitis can progress to the much more serious condition of periodontitis. The more severe your symptoms, the more at risk you are for tooth and bone loss, heart disease and even Alzheimer’s disease. Having a good oral health routine can help, but sometimes it is not enough. There are several other factors that contribute to gingivitis and periodontitis such as, hormones, heredity, smoking, illness and certain medications.

Healthy gums are firm, elastic and fit snugly around your teeth. If this is not what you observe when you look in the mirror, it’s time to call Anthem Periodontics to protect your health today.
